Authorities from Jonglei State have said they are talking with Akobo and Uror counties’ commissioners to stop armed youth from mass mobilization.
The state minister of information, John Samuel told Eye Radio the authorities called on armed youth not to attack the neighboring Pibor Administrative area.
This came after the United Nations Mission in South Sudan on Wednesday warned of threats of mass attacks in Greater Jonglei.
In a press release on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, the UN stated that it is deeply concerned about the reported mobilization of armed youth in the Greater Jonglei area.
The Mission says such mobilizations have the potential to trigger violent attacks that can gravely impact the civilian population.
However, the state minister of information told Eye Radio the situation is calm in the area, but they will find out more about this report.
“I talked to the commissioner of Akobo yesterday [Wednesday, December 21, 2022] and he said everything is calm and all the youths are in their areas. I will try to check with the commissioner of Uror today [Thursday] December 21, 2022],” said Samuel.
“We went down there, and we talked to our people not to retaliate, this was because of the numerous attack that has been carryout by the armed youth from the greater Pibor administrative area,
“From November to this December, we have more than twelve incidents that have happened in Jonglei state, abduction of children, riding of cattle and killing, and we are yet to verify that claim,
