The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat has “strongly condemned” and called for justice in the reported killing of South Sudanese nationals in Wad Madani of Sudan’s Al Jazira State.
After the fall of Wad Madani on January 11, 2025, chilling footages were published on social media of dead South Sudanese nationals in civilian clothes – and a man slaughtered on camera as soldiers shouted “Allah Akbar” (God is Great).
The atrocities blamed the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) under Gen. Abdel Fattah Al Burhan – raised concern about the safety of thousands of South Sudanese nationals who are stranded in the war-torn neighboring country.
In South Sudan, angry youth attacked a number of Sudanese-owned shops in markets in Juba and Aweil between Thursday and Friday in an apparent reprisal for the incident.
Nine people have been confirmed dead following violent demonstrations in Aweil town, police said, adding that among the deceased, two are South Sudanese, and seven were Sudanese nationals.
Police also confirmed the killing of three people and the wounding of seven others in confrontation with security forces protecting businesses in different residential areas in Juba on Thursday night.
Calm has since returned to Juba although many businesses remain closed on Saturday – amid a dusk to dawn curfew aimed at limiting late gatherings that contributed to the night-time thefts.
In a press statement on January 18, AUC chief Mr. Faki appealed to the Sudan government to fully investigate the “heinous crime” and bring perpetrators to justice.
“The Chairperson conveys his sincere condolences to the families of the victims, the Government and people of South Sudan, while urging for restraint or any acts that could lead to further violence,” the statement said.
Mr. Faki reiterated the African Union’s call on all relevant actors to urgently continue to work with the AU towards a peaceful resolution of the intolerable conflict in Sudan.
The Sudanese junta has formed a committee that was already sworn in to investigate the atrocities, according the head of committee, Yassir Bashir Al-Bukhari who is First Assistant to the Attorney General of the Sudan.
