Parliament postpones debate on Elections Act amendments

The National Legislatve Assembly has postponed a sitting to consider amendments to the National Elections Act until 2 PM today.

The session was scheduled to begin at 10 AM at Parliament but was pushed to the afternoon. No reason has been given for the postponement.

Lawmakers are expected to debate and pass the National Elections Act, 2012 (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which is intended to pave the way for elections at the end of the year.

The bill was presented to Parliament last week by the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Dr. Wek Mamer Kuol.

Dr. Wek Mamer said the proposed amendments are aimed at harmonizing inconsistencies in the 2012 Elections Act, as amended in 2023, and ensuring it conforms to the Transitional Constitution and other relevant laws.

Following the presentation, Oliver Mori, the spokesperson of Parliament, said the proposed amendments cover two chapters and 17 sections.

He said one of the provisions would give the President powers to remove the First Vice President and Vice Presidents, adding that the President would remain in full powers until the end of the election.

The bill was referred to the Committee on Legislation and Justice for consideration and was expected to return to the plenary for debate after two weeks.

Some MPs have said they expect a heated debate over the proposed amendments.
