The Commissioner of Torit County in Eastern Equatoria State says unknown gunmen ambushed and shot at a vehicle along the Kapoeta road yesterday, wounding a policeman.

German Charles Ojok says the gunmen attacked the vehicle at Kiyala Payam, near the junction of Lopa-Lafon corridor, and exchanged fire with policemen who were in the car.

He says the policeman who was wounded in the fighting was rushed to Torit for treatment.

“We call them actually robbers. There were policemen who were actually in the vehicle and they did very well to protect the people in the vehicle. And there was an exchange of bullets, and it was so unfortunate that one of the police was shot almost in the mouth.” The Commissioner said.

“But it was good enough because the bullet never penetrated into the bones. We then quickly decided to make sure that his to be sent to Torit for medical attention.” He added.

The Commissioner this week warned youth in Torit against possessing arms.

He made the warning after unknown gunmen shot and killed a woman at her farm. Another woman was killed on Monday morning on the road between Lorianga and Loguruny.

The chairperson of the youth in the area also sustained wounds after being shot at last week.
