According to a statement from the military on Wednesday, as reported by the Associated Press, the attack occurred shortly after the ceremony concluded.
Gen. Burhan, who was present at the event, escaped unharmed, as confirmed by Lt. Col. Hassan Ibrahim from the military spokesman’s office.
Sudan has been embroiled in conflict for over a year between the military and the powerful paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Amid ongoing hostilities in Khartoum, the military leadership primarily operates from eastern Sudan near the Red Sea Coast.
This assassination attempt comes just days after Sudan’s paramilitary leader, Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, announced plans to attend ceasefire talks in Switzerland next month, facilitated by the United States and Saudi Arabia.
Dagalo emphasized that these talks could be a pivotal step towards achieving peace, and stability, and establishing a new Sudanese state founded on principles of justice, equality, and federal governance.
