AJOC Calls for Scrutinization of UNISFA

Author : | Published: Sunday, May 12, 2013

The acting co-chair of the Abyei Joint Over-sight says performance of the United Nations mission in Abyei should be reviewed.

The call comes a week after the Ngok Dinka chief, Kuol Deng Kuol, was allegedly shot dead in the presence of the UN peacekeepers.

Deng Mading was addressing reporters in Juba upon his arrival from Abyei this afternoon:

“The AJOC from Sudan side, will not be able to go to Abyei because the same UNISFA which failed to protect us may also fail to protect them from the Ngok Dinka.”

Mr. Mading said the killing of the chief has also impacted on AJOC.

“Unless there is a review on that [UNISFA], I don’t think the two sides of AJOC will meet in Abyei whatever the case.”

There are over 4,000 UN peace keepers under the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei, UNISFA.

The force is composed of soldiers of the Ethiopian army led by Major General Yohannes Tesfamariam.
