Research is under way to write the first history of South Sudan since Independence.

On Martyrs Day, lecturers from Juba University visited the tomb of the late freedom fighter Aggrey Jaden Lado in Lanya County, as part of their research.

The head of the Department of Private Law at Juba University, Ayok Chol told Eye Radio that it is very important to write the history of the people who were part of the independence struggle.

“They say if you want to control somebody, you colonize the mind; our mind has been colonized since Turkey’s days,” he said.  “We have been learning the history of others, so we now want to write our history. We are starting with our late Father and founder of the independence movement, Aggrey Jaden”

Mister Ayok Chol said that they chose Aggrey Jaden because he was the one who laid down the foundation of the armed struggle in the 1950s in South Sudan.

Aggrey Jaden Lado Wani died on August 1986 in Khartoum Teaching Hospital.

Academics from Juba University have nominated July as ‘South Sudan history month,’ starting from next year.
