Vice President Hussein Abdelbagi is expected in Warrap State to assess the stalled construction of Akon International Airport in Gogrial West County, the state government said.
Launched in August 2023, the construction of Akon International Airport was scheduled to be completed in two years.
It is being built by South Sudanese-owned company Wunkoc Engineering and Modern Contractors – but it is not clear who is funding the project.
However, Warrap Information Minister William Wol Mayom revealed that the construction work had been suspended due to seasonal floods that have inundated the site.
In an interview with Eye Radio, Mayom said Vice President Abdelbagi will visit the construction site at Akon International Airport and a new school before its commissioning.
“We are waiting for the vice president. He’s coming today to Akon to assess the ongoing construction of the airport and other infrastructures in Warrap. So the governor is now at the border waiting for the vice president,” he said.
“He is coming to assess the airport and other infrastructures that are under construction in the area in Akon Payam. There is ongoing construction of school and health facility, and other social amenities.”
Minister Mayom said construction on Akon airport was progressing well until widespread flashfloods submerged the site and forced its suspension.
According to him, Abdelbagi would assess the level of floodwater, and when the construction of the facility will resume.
