UN clears UN Trusteeship rumors

The UN has dismissed media reports that it wants to administer South Sudan as a protectorate if the warring parties fail to reach a peace agreement.

There have been reports in South Sudanese and regional media claiming that the United Nations has a plan to place the Republic of South Sudan under a “protectorate”, according to UNMISS.

Members of the Government of South Sudan have also brought these reports to the attention of the leadership of UNMISS and voiced their concern.

The spokesman of the UN Secretary General, Mr. Stephan Dujarric, said there are no plans for the world body to administer South Sudan.

“I can tell you that these reports are completely false and not true,” said Mr Dujarric.

“The Secretary-General wishes to make it categorically clear that neither he nor the UN Mission in South Sudan, UNMISS, is aware of any plans or discussions within the United Nations to take such course of action.

“The UN has supported the cause of self-determination for South Sudan from the time of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement through to the 2011 referendum and independence.

“None of this would have been possible without the help of the United Nations.”

Last week, the Council of Ministers formed a committee to lobby against imposition of sanctions by the United Nations Security Council.
