President Salva Kiir Mayardit has once again reshaped his government, dismissing several senior officials and bringing in new faces through a series of decrees announced last evening.
The changes, broadcast on SSBC on Friday evening, affect key institutions including the health sector, the Ruweng Administrative Area, and the finance ministry, signaling a continued effort to reconfigure leadership across critical offices.
Among the most notable changes is at the Ministry of Health, where Kiir relieved Sarah Cleto Rial of her position. She represented the SPLM-IO. In her place, the president appointed Luke Thomson Thoan, also from the same party, to take over the docket at a time when the country continues to face public health challenges.
Luke Thomson Thoan currently serves as a lawmaker in the East African Legislative Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania, bringing regional legislative experience to the role.
Attention has also turned to the oil rich Ruweng Administrative Area, where leadership has shifted. Kiir removed Stephano Wieu Mialek as Chief Administrator and appointed Daniel Makuei Thiyeer as his replacement.
He now takes charge of an area recently shaken by violence, including a deadly attack that killed nearly 200 people in Abiemnhom County.
The incident was reportedly carried out by armed attackers believed to have come from neighbouring Mayom County of Unity State.
In the economic sector, the reshuffle touched the Ministry of Finance and Planning. The president dismissed Deputy Minister Yien Chan Gach Ruei, who represented the SPLM-IO, and elevated Thoak Turuk Thoak, also from the same party, to serve as the new Minister of Finance and Planning.
The changes extended to the Ministry of Cabinet Affairs as well. In a separate decree, Kiir relieved Garang Tong Aken of his position as Deputy Minister and appointed Alier Samuel Ateny as his successor.
While such decrees are not uncommon, the latest reshuffle introduces a new group of officials now tasked with steering key sectors of government.
Their appointments come at a time when citizens are closely watching for improvements in service delivery, economic management, and local administration.
As the new appointees settle into their roles, attention will likely turn to how quickly they can respond to immediate challenges and deliver tangible results on the ground.
