Tonj East County Location
At least 27 people have been killed during violent clashes between the Luac-jang and Jalwou communities in Kongor area of Tonj East County, Warrap State.
The conflict erupted in the early hours of 14th January, with hundreds of cattle reportedly raided from the Jalwou community.
Information Minister Mamer Bath Mathiok confirmed the outbreak of violence to Eye Radio, saying the government is assessing the full extent of the damage.
“The violence was confirmed. It actually happened, but it has been contained. The government contained the situation on the ground,” Minister Bath said. “There are 27 lives claimed. The cause of the violence is the cycle of revenge killing, which is obvious to us.”
Warrap State Civil Society Organizations Network (WACSON) condemned the clashes, describing them as “senseless” and warning that repeated conflicts threaten the security and well-being of the state.
In a statement dated January 15th, WACSON called upon the Luac-jang and Jalwao communities to immediately cease fighting and refrain from retaliation.“We urge the Warrap State Government and the national government to intervene without delay and deploy security forces to protect civilians,” the statement read.
The civil society group further appealed to peacebuilding partners and community leaders to support inclusive dialogue, stressing that ongoing insecurity in Warrap State has wider implications for the nation.
