The Assistant Medical Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Juba Teaching Hospital said they recorded 32 deliveries during the New Year period.

Lucky Gloria Ambrose explained that the facilities helped delivered 20 babies including a set of twins born on December 31 and 12 more on January 1.

She said surgeons performed 16 caesarian sections, with one infant dying at birth and a woman suffering a miscarriage.

“On New Year’s Eve, we had eight deliveries: three boys and five girls. These were normal deliveries, and then 10 cesarean sections with a set of twins. So, total deliveries that day were 20, then we lost one pregnancy,” she said.

“On January 1, we had 12 deliveries, 8 girls and 3 living boys, one passed on. Those are normal deliveries. And then at cesarean section, we had 6 cesarean section, 3 boys and 3 girls.”

Mrs. Gloria Ambrose encouraged expectant mothers to seek regular antenatal care at clinics to monitor their pregnancy and ensure that they are healthy.

“Any pregnant woman, any couple who are expecting a baby or they are planning to get the baby, the hospital is here to guide them.”

“They have to seek medical attention as early as possible because some may start seeking medical attention when it is actually late and the results will not be very good to them and to us as health workers.”

The current infant mortality rate in South Sudan stand at 56.748 deaths per 1,000 live births, a 1.59% decline from 2024.
