The joint security forces tasked with restoring calm following the unrest triggered by the killing of South Sudanese Nationals in Wed Madani have arrested 24 people including a servicewoman during house-to-house search of items looted in Juba.
The protest was marked by vandalism and looting at shops owned by Sudanese traders in Juba and other parts of the country.
In an attempt to quell the tensions and restore law and order, the joint security forces launched an abrupt house-to-house search in the aftermath of the violence.
According to SSPDF spokesperson Maj. General Lul Ruai, the dozens of suspects were apprehended with food and non-food stuffs during house-to-house search in New-site ares in Juba, Central Equatoria state.
Lul said the arrested individuals will be investigated about the matter and culprits will face criminal charges.
“Now at the New Site, we have a total of 24 prime suspects that were arrested,” Lul said in an interview with Eye Radio.
“We saw one service woman from SSPDF. There are conflicting versions. Some are saying she was apprehended in possession of some food items. She is claiming that she was caught after she had gone to buy.”
“The case is going to be subjected to further investigation so that we know for sure whether she was looted or she was wrongfully arrested. So she will be subjected to further investigation. If she’s found to have been part of the looters, she’s going to be ill accountable.”
“If she was wrongfully detained, she’s going to be released. And the same thing with all that you are seeing here. They’ll let them be sentenced. Further investigation will be done for us checking to know that they are not wrongfully arrested or detained.”
Major General Lui Ruai echoed that the recovery exercise will continue and public will be informed of the outcome accordingly.
“We have started with New-Site because they were the first to recover a lot of looted items. We have started with New-Site and it will continue. The recovery exercise will continue.”
“Once good items are recovered, a good number of items are recovered, wherever they are recovered, I’ll be told. I’ll be informed by the command. I will in turn invite the media so that you replicate the same you have seen here.”
