SPLA moves out of Juba

Author : | Published: Thursday, February 18, 2016

The Minister of Defense says the army resumes today the process of redeploying outside Juba as required by the peace agreement.

In November, the first batch of 250 SPLA soldiers to left Juba for Mogeri as part of the redeployment.

But since then, there were no further redeployments as both parties complained of violations of the ceasefire.

According to the security arrangements, only less than 5,000 soldiers will remain in Juba during the transitional period while the rest will be redeployed outside the town.

The units that will be allowed to remain in Juba include ceremonial guards, a military band, and a logistical battalion.

There will be 3,420 from the government and 1,410 from the SPLM in Opposition.

The rest of the forces will be redeployed 25 kilometers away from Juba town.

The Ministry of defense launched the redeployment of government forces in Juba this morning.

The number of SPLA soldiers who are expected to be cantoned outside Juba today is unclear.
