Fourteen people have been killed and 13 others wounded in a communal fighting in Lakes State’s Cueibet, according to a county official.

The Commissioner of the County, Mayom Malek, says the clash was a revenge for an incident that happened in 2014. However, he could not give details of the incident.

Mr Malek says he led a delegation to the area to calm down the situation.

He told Eye Radio that forces have also been deployed in the area.

“Yesterday, the tension was high, but when we came with minister for local government and commissioner of headquarters, we managed to contain the situation,” Mr Malek said.

Retaliatory attacks in the state are common. In 2014, MPs representing Lakes State in the National Legislative Assembly reported that at least 500 people had been killed in communal fighting that year alone.

Security experts blame the violence on proliferation arms in the hands of civilians.
