Some 11,000 children displaced by the conflict have been vaccinated against polio and measles at UNMISS compounds in Juba.

The vaccination took place in the Tongpiny and Jebel areas of the UN.

Unicef is one of the partners who have been vaccinating the children over the past three days.

The strategic communications officer for Unicef South Sudan told Eye Radio that routine immunization will continue in the compounds to protect newcomers as well.

Dawn Porter also says that Unicef is helping the children in the camps attend school.

“Our education teams are preparing to have friendly spaces and we have schools. In such crowded conditions children really, really need to focus their energy and to continue to learn. So we are definitely planning that children will able to get education at the camp,” Porter said.

Ms Porter says Unicef is concerned by the fact that supply of vaccines to other affected areas is difficult because of ongoing fighting in those areas.

Health organizations have expressed their concerns about the overcrowding and the potential of disease outbreak in the camps.
