The Ministry of Education says more than 1 million children have enrolled in both primary and secondary schools this year.

The number is expected to reach 1.2 million by the end of the year. This suggests that the enrolment will rise by 200,000 compared to last year.

In a statement marking the Girl Child Education Day today, the ministry says slightly more than 400,000 girls have enrolled in school so far.

William Ater, advisor in the ministry, says challenges include low awareness and the political will.

“I hope the current government will be able to work on it,” Mr Ater said.

He added that projects to increase the enrolment of girls in schools include a cash transfer project funded by the United Kingdom.
