No yellow card, no travel

The government says no one will be allowed to enter or leave the country without a Yellow Fever Card to avoid outbreaks of the disease in the country.

It says this follows concerns of massive outbreaks of the disease in neighboring countries of Uganda, Angola, Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Minister of Information, Michael Makuei, says the Minister of Health reported the concern to the Transitional Cabinet during its meeting on Tuesday.

“Anybody who has not been vaccinated should get vaccinated immediately,” Mr Makuei appealed to the public. “So, people are advised to get vaccinated before they travel.”

Yellow fever is a viral hemorrhagic disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes.

In most cases, symptoms include fever, colds, loss of appetite, the urge to vomit, muscle pains particularly in the back, and headaches.

International regulations require proof of yellow fever vaccination for travel to and from certain countries.

People who get vaccinated should be given an International Certificate of Vaccination. The vaccine is to be given at least 10 days before travel to an endemic area.
