The World Food Program says it extends condolences to the family of a five-year-old girl killed by a cargo plane at Juba’s Mangateen area on Tuesday.

The Ilyushin-76 cargo aircraft was contracted by WFP to airdrop food in South Sudan.

It hit a tree and then the metal roof of the single-storey house as it tried to land at Juba International Airport in heavy rain and low visibility, according to a statement issued Thursday.

The aircraft’s jet blast damaged a second house as it climbed sharply up.

Four other people, including a boy, a girl and two women, were injured during the incident.

“We regret to report that a 5-year-old girl was confirmed dead at Juba Teaching Hospital where she was taken following the incident yesterday,” said Adnan Khan, WFP South Sudan Country Director.

The aircraft later diverted to Entebbe International Airport in Uganda. During an emergency landing, its main landing gear collapsed because metal roofing sheets were entangled in it.

“An official investigation is underway and the aircraft will be carefully reviewed to discover what caused it to be so low,” Mr. Khan added.

Speaking to Eye Radio Thursday, WFP Spokesperson,George Fominyen said the UN agency will support the family of the unnamed girl.

“WFP country director Adnan Khan and other WFP officials have been to the area to visit the family and we met with the families to personally condole with them and assure them of every support from WFP,” he said.
