Some Wau residents subsist on lilies – WFP

Author : | Published: Monday, September 26, 2016

Civilians in some parts of Wau town are surviving on wild vegetables such as waterlilies due to food shortages, according to the world Food Program.

The aid organization says the population of the town is vulnerable to hunger although the food deficit has not reached an alarming level.

Last week, WFP and other aid agencies carried out a three-day rapid assessment in the South and West of Wau town, in areas of Mboro, Dakala and Ngoku, where they reported high levels of food insecurity.

The assessment noted that there is a potential for famine and serious hunger in the forthcoming dry seasons. It’s unclear what the WFP plans to do about the situation.

Wau witnessed a series of deadly fighting recently. The armed group-army clashes left about 50 people dead, according to the UN. Thousands of area residents were displaced to UN camps and church premises.
