Four Wau Airport workers have been suspended over a brief pay strike, an official has said.

According to Paul Charles, airport acting director, the employees were suspended over claims that they mobilized their colleagues to stage a strike Wednesday in demand for unpaid allowances.

The workers could not immediately be reached for comment.

The four include the director of the airport Daniel Nhial, a team leader of the workers, communication officer and a driver.

He told Eye Radio Wau authorities suspended the workers for insisting on the strike. But he says airport resumed operation after few hours of stoppage.

“On Monday the operation was not going well because of the strike that took place. So the state government came and solved the issue,” he said.

Mr Charles says he was appointed Wednesday after the suspension of the former director. It’s unclear what position he was holding before.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Information in the state, say they have set-up a committee to address the demands of the workers.

Bona Gudansio told Eye Radio that he would travel to Juba to meet with the national ministry of transport over the matter.

There are about 63 employees working at Wau Airport. The workers say they have not been paid allowances for the last 4 months.
