The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management is conducting a two-day workshop on National Disaster Policy in Warrap State.

The workshop, which will end today, is being attended by 53 people; amongst them are 40 participants representing the six counties of the state.

The Director for Emergency Response and Preparedness in the ministry, Alison Barnaba Yakobo, told Eye Radio that the aim of the workshop is to gather information from the people.

He said this information will be included in the national disaster management policy, which will be presented to the Council of Ministers and the National Assembly for enactment into law.

“We are collecting information from the people because by the people we will be able to manage. So sometimes we take decision from up and then it is not effective on the ground, but if the people are participating in what the national ministry will come up with as a policy for the nation, I think it will be more effectively implemented,” Mr Alison explained.

Mr. Alison Barnaba said they have started with Warrap because it is one of the six most vulnerable states in South Sudan.

He said the participants who represented the populations in the six counties have identified floods, cattle riding and diseases’ outbreaks as major disasters in Warrap State.
