WARRAP LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY RECONVENES AFTER 3-MONTH RECESS

Warrap state legislators have reconvened after three months’ leave to debate peace, stability and good governance.

Three quarters of Warrap state legislators attended the official opening of the second session of the state Assembly.

The acting governor, Hon. Akec Tong Aleu, told the state legislators in parliament that insecurity and poor rainfall in the country have contributed to a meager harvest and food production in the state.

Aleu said an acute shortage of food would hit the host community and Internally Displaced Persons from neighboring Unity state and Abyei area.

He called on the legislators to mobilize their constituents to start growing vegetables so they have sustainable living conditions in the area.

He urged the local farmers to get seeds of sorghum from the state ministry of agriculture to continue with cultivation before the rainy season stops.

“We have to educate our people to consider vegetable cultivation in addition to normal dura and ‘gidem amam’ varieties which are their staple foods,” said Mr Aleu.

“The Ministry of agriculture is currently distributing ‘gidem amam’ seeds in the counties. We must encourage our people to continue production through twelve months of the year.

The deputy speaker of the state legislative Assembly, Hon. Kerbino Kiir Madut, appealed to the state government to reinstate the civil servants commission in the state.

Kiir said irregular appointments and promotions are rampant in the civil servants offices which, he said, require reforms through a systematic set up in the state.

“Civil servants, who are the backbone of the country, are in a mess because there is too much abuse of power through the seniority system,” he told the assembly.

“Irregular appointments and ethnic promotions are common. An equitable and defensible clear structure can’t be achieved unless structures and systematic progress are used to assess jobs value.”

The legislature’s representative, Hon David Deng Mayom, says the issue of health in Warrap state is alarming.

He said poor road have reflected on the prices of goods and commodities in the market.

Legislators had been on leave since May.
