UDF urges partners to review constitution

Author : | Published: Thursday, July 7, 2016

The United Democratic Front party has urged the peace partners to speed up the constitutional review process as part of the implementation of the peace agreement.

According to the peace agreement, a review committee should have incorporated the deal into the transitional national constitution three weeks after the signing.

The UDF says the delay to amend the constitution in time shows that the implementation process is slow.

“But they did not [incorporate] the agreement into the constitution; and since the peace agreement is not there, that means the constitution is not there,” said John Orelio, UDF Secretary General.

“We are living in a country without law and without constitution because we are supposed to use the constitution that the agreement has introduced.”

But the government says the review of the constitution depends on the arrival of the chairperson appointed by the JMEC.

“Everything is dependent on the arrival of the chairperson for the resumption of the work and on the outstanding issues which are the root cause of the disagreement,” Michael Makuei Lueth, Minister of Information, told Eye Radio.

He went on to say he  has “no knowledge whether he is in town or not”.

In January, First Vice President Riek Machar said the 28 states were among disputed issues in the review process.

But the deputy spokesman in his office, Nyari Germilili, has not been immediately available for comment on the current delay in the process.
