The U.S Government has reiterated that more sanctions will be imposed on the warring parties in South Sudan if they do not stop the conflict.

The U.S Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan, Ambassador Donald Booth, says the interest of the TROIKA, the U.S, the UK and the Norway in South Sudan is lasting peace.

Addressing the media in Juba this afternoon, Ambassador Booth, urged the government and the SPLM-SPLA in Opposition to get serious and negotiate peace and end the conflict.

“So the message is not really about sanctions, the message is about please get serious in negotiating the peace agreement. This is what the people of South Sudan need. International community will do what it can to encourage that process, and if need be for further sanctions, then those steps will have to be taken.” Booth said.

Booth urged the two parties to have compromise during the negotiations, especially on power sharing arrangements, so that they can have an agreement and end the conflict.

“Every time we go out and we meet with people outside, in official offices, the message is we just want peace, and they don’t know how to get there. And so that is why we are here trying to work, talking to many different people and trying to help find that way out for peace. ” said the Ambassador.

Ambassador Donald Booth said there is a dire humanitarian situation in South Sudan.

He appealed to the warring parties to ensure that the coming dry season is used for prepositioning assistance that will be needed in the coming year.
