Gov’t approves RPF deployment

The Transitional Government of National Unity has unanimously accepted the Regional Protection Force to be deployed in South Susan under the United Nations Mission in the country.

This was resolved during a session of the regular meetings of the Council of Ministers on Friday, chaired by President Salva Kiir.

Briefing journalists following the session, the Deputy Minister of Information, Akol Paul Kordit stated that all outstanding issues impeding deployment of the force have been resolved with the other relevant parties involved, and that the force can now be deployed in Juba.

He said: “…..your cabinet has resolved unanimously to allow the deployment of the Regional Protection Force anytime from now

“…. from the armament, the troops contributing countries, areas of deployment and operationalization of the resolution itself, have already been exhausted.

“So we are ready as a country and a government.”

Details agreed upon by the parties on the countries from which the troops will come and their armament, among others, are yet to be known.

In September this year, the UN Security Council approved deployment of the 4000 troops, but it was delayed due to the unresolved requirements.

Once deployed, the regional Protection Force; sourced through the African Union, will be charged with the protection of civilians, key public infrastructure including the Juba International Airport, and act as a buffer between warring sides.
