S Sudanese refugees plead for aid in CAR

The UN Refugee Agency says about 7,000 South Sudanese refugees who fled violence to the Central African Republic are still living in desperate conditions.

Most of the refugees registered recently fled renewed violence between the government and a vigilante youth group allied to the opposition in the Western Equatoria region.

The UNHCR Communication Officer in South Sudan, Rocco Nuri told Eye Radio that the agency supplied about 4,000 of the refugees with items such as shelter, households and others, but it was not enough.

Mr Nuri says the refugees are settled in Bambouti, an area difficult to access in the eastern part of the Central African Republic.

“The refugees are in a bad condition. We did our first response with food and non-food items, but they definitely need extra support from the international community,” he told Eye Radio.

Mr Nuri says there are about 11, 000 South Sudanese seeking refuge in the neighboring countries of the Central Africa Republic, Uganda, and the DR Congo in general.
