Sudan: S Sudanese refugees to be relocated after riots

Author : | Published: Tuesday, August 22, 2017

The UN refugee agency and Sudanese authorities are set to relocate South Sudanese refugees in White Nile State over recent violence in the camp.

The move comes after Sudanese authorities reported riots in El Waral camp earlier this month.

On the second of August, clashes between the refugees and the security broke out at the camp, leading to destruction of UN food stores and a health facility.

The root cause of the fighting is not clear – but according to the Sudanese media, it was triggered by sexual assault of four female Sudanese teachers.

While others reported that the riots in the camp came after Sudanese police beat a refugee to death.

Eye Radio has been unable to verify any of these claims.

Meanwhile, the UNHCR representative in Sudan, Norika Yushida, says Sudanese authorities are investigating the matter.

“We will see how the outcome of the investigation will be and then if we need we have to take some necessary measures,” Ms Yushida told the media in Khartoum on Monday.

“But as we already mentioned, none of us, including the refugees, will be above the law.

El Waral camp, with about 53,000 South Sudanese, is the largest refugee camp in White Nile state.

There are more than 160,000 refugees in the state bordering South Sudan. It’s not clear to where the Sudanese refugees at El Waral camp will be relocated.
