Two SPLM officials behind bars-WBG

A member of the SPLM in Northern Bhar al-Ghazal State says two of his colleagues have been arrested.

John Gaw Riak, the Assistant Secretary for Popular and Syndicated Organizations in the state, says the arrest followed a disagreement on how to replace some members of the state Liberation Council.

Riak says the SPLM secretariat in the state met today to replace members who have died or have joined the SPLM in Opposition.

He says the Advisor on Roads and Development, Yel Deng Nguel and former deputy governor, Arkanjello Athian, were taken to an army barrack.

“These people were taken by the army, three tuckers full of military police. I think these people are Wunyik now, the headquarters of the army. Even the police, when I quarreled with one of them, wanted to arrest me. And I said ‘you arrest me’ and they refused to arrest me.” Riak said.

He says he and other members left the meeting in protest of the arrests.

Efforts to reach the state governor or the SPLA spokesperson for a comment were not successful.
