Speak in one voice against S Sudan crisis, UNSC members told

The UN officials have called upon the Security Council to speak in unison against the political, security and humanitarian situation that they say has impacted negatively on the South Sudanese people.

The Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Nicholas Haysom, told the council members Thursday that the security situation and the level of the crisis have been worsened by the continuing clashes between armed groups and government forces.

Mr. Haysom says a clear commitment to an inclusive and credible peace process which is backed internationally will pave way for stability in South Sudan.

Last year, President Salva Kiir launched the national dialogue process, and the SPLM factions have been meeting in Uganda to implement the Arusha document on reunifications.

IGAD leaders also called for revitalization forum that will see all signatories to the peace agreement meet to review the timeline and iron out issues that affected its implementation.

“The revitalization forum, the National Dialogue or the other initiatives should neither adopt the agenda of the other, nor overload the agenda of competing initiatives with their goals,” Haysom said.

Nicholas Haysom says he remains hopeful that five ongoing international and regional initiatives could help resolve the political and security crisis.

He says his office will support these initiatives towards a sustainable peace.
