S Sudan is not for SPLM – Kiir

Author : | Published: Tuesday, October 25, 2016

President Salva Kiir has directed the state governors to work with members of other political parties, saying the country is not for the ruling party alone.

The President has appointed the governors as interim chairpersons of the SPLM in their respective states.

In a statement on the SSBC last evening, the President said South Sudan is for everyone and so the SPLM governors should work with other parties in reconciling the people.

“It’s not necessary that they join our party, but we must work with them together because South Sudan is for all of us. It is not for the SPLM,” Mr Kiir said.

“And I’m now telling you the governors because you’re the ones going to the grass roots.”

For her party, the SPLM Acting Secretary-General, Jemma Nunu Kumba, said working with other political parties is part of multi-partism.

Ms Nunu said the SPLM, as a ruling party, needs to work with other parties to move the country forward:

“As you may recall, our President has called upon the SPLM and all the people of Sudan to support the IOs under the leadership of Taban Deng Gai to implement the peace agreement, because what we need now is peace in our country”.

The SPLM leaders made the remarks after a series of meetings with the governors and other party officials.
