The SPLM spokesperson in Abyei says one person has been killed and another wounded by suspected armed groups from Sudan.

Waar Majak says since last week a number of attacks happened in different villages in Abyei area by the armed groups.

He says two days ago, two men were killed on their way from Abyei to Twic State.

“These attacks led to the killing of a woman in the area of Marial- Achak and another woman has been wounded. And on the road going to Anit market, two men have been killed and they were coming from Twic state. These attacks are not new on Abyei,” Majak said.

Mr. Majak says the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei always withdraws its forces in the rainy season and hence civilians are at risk of attacks.

He also said most of the attacks are being done at night when the forces have concluded patrols in the area.

“It’s organized attacks on the civilians and the motive behind it is creating fears among civilians and preventing them from the voluntary return to the different villages and areas in Abyei,” he said.

Mr. Majak urged the government to increase its efforts and pressure on Peace and Security Council of African Union to resolve the issue of Abyei to stop the suffering of civilians in the area.

“Our calls to the government of South Sudan is to increase its diplomatic meetings between the African Union and on Abyei issue and give them pressure on government of Sudan to stop targeting civilians or even support the UNICFA forces to protect the civilians in different areas of Abyei and conduct its tasks in official way to protect civilians and their properties,” he said.
