Riek decries lack of new initiative on peace deal

Former First Vice President Dr Riek Machar says regional bodies and the United Nations are failing to rescue the South Sudan peace agreement.

Dr. Riek Machar says there is no any initiative from the UN and the African Union on how to fully implement the agreement, which he says collapsed in July.

Dr. Riek spoke to the media at Khartoum airport while leaving for South Africa yesterday.

“We did not see that there is an initiative from the region or the United Nations or the African Union to rescue the agreement. From our side the agreement has collapsed, from or part the government of national unity has collapsed since July events, we do not want violence,” he said.

Dr. Riek fled Juba in July after his forces fought with those of President Kiir at statehouse, J1.

He was later replaced by his former chief negotiator, Taban Deng Gai, who pledged to work with President Salva Kiir on the implementation of the agreement.

Last month, Dr Riek said his group would make a pro-longed armed resistance against what he calls a violation of the agreement.

South African President Jacob Zuma has now joined other world leaders, including from the UN, urging Dr Riek to reverse his call for violence.
