The president of the republic has sent a delegation on a two-day visit to Eritrea to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mawien Makol, told Eye Radio that discussions have already kicked off between the two sides.

‘’ They left on Saturday. They are now in Asmara in a meeting with the government there. The delegation is headed by the deputy minister of foreign affairs, Honorable Peter Bashir Bandi, accompanied by Ambassador Lazaro Akui, director of African affairs and the director of his office, Hassan Yousif Ngor. They are there to consult with the government of Eritrea about relations between the two countries, South Sudan and Eritrea, and carry the message of the president to his Excellency the president of Eritrea, Isaias Afwerki”, Makol said.

Ambassador Mawien added that the Eritrean government has been giving support to South Sudan since violence broke out.

‘’ … they are supporting the government here to handle the issue in a peaceful manner as quickly as possible so that our people get peace”, he added.

Last month, the Eritrean president, Isaias Afewerki, announced Eritrea’s political support for the government of South Sudan.
