Other political parties fail to sign peace deal

The Minister of Cabinet Affairs says leaders of other political parties have failed to sign the agreement as stakeholder because IGAD wants some provisions of the deal to be changed.

Dr Elia Lomoro and Dr Akol have been meeting with the IGAD Chief Mediator Seyoum Mesfin, to discuss how the other parties could be involved in the implementation of the peace process.

Dr Martin is leading a group allied to the government, while Dr Akol is leading a separate one opposed to the government.

Each of the two leaders wants to sign the agreement on behalf of the other political parties.

Dr Lomoro says their meeting last week with Dr Akol in the presence of chief mediator Seyoum Mesfin reached no resolution.

“It was passed on to the IGAD mediators [who] made terrible mistakes,” Dr Lomoro told Eye Radio.

“Instead, they started to change items of the agreement, and we disagreed; we said that the agreement is fine by the principles, and anything in the agreement cannot be changed anymore. So we are waiting for further response from IGAD.”

Dr Akol is yet to comment. But in a previous interview with Eye Radio, Dr Akol confirmed his disagreement with Dr Lomoro over who should sign.

The political parties were taking part in the peace process as one group until they split in September 2014.

Dr Akol was then denied an exit visa at the Juba airport while travelling to Addis Ababa to take part in the talks.

IGAD envoys later sent to Juba the group that was approved by the airport authorities to go to Addis Ababa.

The talks continued without the participation of the other political groups until the warring parties sign the agreement in August.

Mediators now want the political parties to sign as other stakeholders.
