Number of arrested SPLM-IO members rises

Author : | Published: Wednesday, April 13, 2016

The SPLM in opposition says the number of its members arrested since yesterday has now increased to 20.

The opposition earlier reported 16, with further information that they were later released.

But the spokesperson of the group says those arrested are still in detention.

William Ezekiel says there is no information about the arrests, which started before the arrival of General Ladu Gore yesterday.  Government officials are yet to comment.

But there are reports that they were arrested for mobilizing the public to the reception of the opposition Deputy Chairperson, Alfred Ladu Gore at the airport.

Mr Ezekiel says no case has been filed against those arrested.

“But they have been telling us that they are still investigating [them], and they will leave them soon,” he told Eye Radio.

Eye Radio’s efforts to reach the Minister of Information or the press secretary in the office of the president for a comment have not been successful.

Meanwhile, the Civil Society Alliance says it is investigating the matter.

“We are engaging the government; to know why they were arrested and who they are,” Akouch Ajang, Chairperson of the alliance, told reporters during a press conference in Juba.
