The parliament in Northern Bahr al Ghazal says most of the companies that were given letters of credit have misused them.

44 companies were issued the letters last year to access the US dollars cheaply in order to reduce the market prices of commodities, especially foodstuffs.

However, only five of the companies properly used the money.

“Yesterday the State Legislative assembly finally passed a “list of shame” of those companies that were told to talk to the assembly or show how they delivered services with the LCs,” reported Abraham Agoth, Eye Radio’s Stringer in Aweil.

“Unfortunately, out of 44 companies that were issued a lump sum amount of $6 million, only five companies were confirmed to have delivered some services worth of around $500,000.”

The state parliament says the names of 39 companies which misused the money will be publicized across the country. And they will not be allowed to apply for letters of credit again.
