MSF evacuates staff from Leer over ‘double looting’

Author : | Published: Wednesday, October 7, 2015

The charity group, MSF, has suspended medical activities and evacuated its team from Leer County in Unity State, citing looting at its compound by armed men.

The group says its compound has been looted twice last week.

In a statement, MSF says armed men entered its compound, intimidated staff with threat of violence.

They stole medical supplies, vehicles, technical equipment and personal belongings.

MSF said the armed men again returned on Saturday to loot the compound, forcing the charity to suspend activities and evacuated the staff.

The medical charity says the incident happened amid renewed fighting in the area.

“MSF strongly condemns these armed robberies of its medical personnel and facilities,” says MSF Emergency Manager Tara Newell.

“These incidents have forced MSF to suspend its medical activities in Leer and they are responsible for depriving the population of urgently needed medical assistance.”

The group also said it’s ‘deeply concerned for the health of vulnerable populations in Leer and denounces the targeting of its medical operations’.

“MSF demands an explanation from those responsible for these unacceptable incidents and for the return of its humanitarian supplies and equipment,” it added in a statement.

On Monday, the International Committee of the Red Cross suspended its humanitarian work and evacuated its staff over similar security concerns.
