MPs summon finance minister over shortfalls in the proposed budget

The National Parliament has summoned the Minister of Finance, David Deng Athorbei, to explain what they consider shortfalls in the annual budget for next year.

Earlier this month, Mr Deng presented to the assembly a budget of more than 10 billion pounds.

The MPs say it was in form of block grants without details. They also want the minister to explain how the budget for last year was spent.

“We need it to be detailed so that we know exactly how it should be used,” said Thomas Wani, chairperson of Committee of Information and Culture committee.

“Number two, we need to know more about the performance of last year, how was the budget of last year used? Then what the difficulties were so that we can compare.

“Should it have any implementing agencies of last year so that we can correct before we pass it.”

The budget is expected to be presented for discussion next week. But honorable Wani did not say when the minister will appear before the assembly to clarify the issues raised.
