The SPLM in Opposition under Dr. Riek Machar has confirmed the party will sign the revitalized preliminary agreement in the Khartoum later on Thursday evening.
On Tuesday, all parties with the exception of the SPLM-IO of Dr. Riek Machar and the South Sudan Opposition Alliance, SSOA participated in the initial signing of the final deal.
Both groups cited the absence of clear text or provision on the resolution of the issues on the number of the states, the proposed process for the constitutional making and issues of responsibility sharing approach in relation to allocation of ministries.
But, on Wednesday the IO said it was considering to ink the document- but after consulting with the mediators.
Speaking to Eye Radio, IO deputy spokesperson, Manawa Peter said Dr. Machar held consultations with the Sudanese leadership on Wednesday and has decided to initial the agreement with some reservations.
This comes, he said after the Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir assured him of raising his concerns to the IGAD heads of state.
“We agreed that today we will sign initially the outstanding issues in Khartoum and then we will wait for the next phase maybe after the meeting of the heads of state, people can reach the last agreement,” he told Eye Radio.
The signing by the parties marked the conclusion of the Khartoum peace process and the document is expected to be deliberated upon by the IGAD heads of state and governments for final signing.
