Lakes peace conference recommends release of detained MPs

Author : | Published: Thursday, February 19, 2015

Participants at the peace conference in Lakes state have asked for the release of two members of the state parliament who have been in detention since October.

Marik Nanga of Rumbek North County and Makur Buoch of Rumbek East County were charged with inciting communal violence.

They were also accused of not campaigning for a disarmament process.

At the three-day peace conference that ended yesterday, members say the release of the MPs will be a sign of peace and reconciliation.

But the state Minister of Information, Dhieu Wol, says they will be investigated and taken to court before they are released.

“It is a discussion but it has not come out as a resolution. I think it is going to be done through the court,” Mr Dhieu told Eye Radio.

The conference also resolved to disarm civilians, reconcile communities and deploy forces in the area.

President Salva Kiir, governors from the Greater Bahr el Ghazal region and civil society members attended the conference.
