Kiir visits South Africa

President Salva Kiir left for South Africa this morning on a two day visit to discuss progress of the implementation of the peace deal with President Jacob Zuma.

South Africa has been playing a role in helping South Sudan find lasting solutions to the conflict.

Early this year, South African President Jacob Zuma invited the two warring parties to the peace process to Johannesburg for a round table discussion on the reunification of the SPLM party.

This followed a series of stalled talks between the two sides in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

An agreement was later signed in May in the Tanzanian city of Arusha on the reunification of the party.

The Presidential Press Secretary, Ateny Wek Ateny, says President Kiir and his counterpart, Jacob Zuma, will also discuss bilateral relations between the two countries.

“The president is going to enlighten and inform President Jacob Zuma of South Africa, about the intention of the government to implement the agreement as it was signed on the 26th of August, 2015,” Mr Ateny said.

The president is accompanied by senior government officials.
