Kala-azar cases rise in conflict zones

Cases of Kala-azar in the conflict-stricken parts of South Sudan have increased due to poor environment, MSF has said.

Kala-azara is a fatal disease spread by infected sand fly. Its Symptoms include fever, loss of weight, weakness, ulcers and sores.

MSF Deputy Medical Coordinator in South Sudan Ahmed Addy says they have six hundred Kala-azara patients on treatment.

He said 60% of the patients are children.

“Since 2013 and specifically in April, we have seen increased number of Kala-azar,” said Mr Addy.

“Up to now we have treated two thousand patients. Last year, 2013, we had treated one thousand three hundred patients.”

Mr. Ahmed said they have established Kala-azara treatment centers in Lanken and Chuel areas.
