The Adviser for Peace and Reconciliation in Fashoda State urging the international community to help negotiate release of South Sudanese refugees in detention in Sudan.

More than 150 South Sudanese refugees were arrested by Sudanese authorities in White Nile last month, Abdullah Kur said.

It’s not clear what crime the men have committed, but according to Sudanese media, the refugees allegedly sexually assaulted Sudanese teachers at Khor Waral Refugee Camp.

White Nile State in Sudan hosts more than 160,000 South Sudanese refugees, most of whom fled the fighting in the Upper Nile Region, including Fashoda State.

Khor Waral camp is the largest refugee camp in White Nile state, with more than 50,000 South Sudanese.

Early this month, the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, reported violence in the camp that resulted in burning and destruction of property.

The incident reportedly started with rumors that a refugee youth had died in police custody, a statement from the UNHCR in Sudan said.
