The Secretary General of the Chamber of Commerce says many illegal checkpoints have resumed operations along the Juba- Nimule highway.

Simon Akuei says they did a survey, in which they found that there were up to 20 tables collecting money from traders. Mr. Akuei told Eye Radio that the illegal collection resumed due to the economic crisis.

The illegal checkpoints were closed down in 2012 by the Minister of Interior over concerns that the high collections were leading to a rise in the prices.

“Now you have to pay to 20 tables  before you reach Juba -from custom to the last person, maybe to the traffic,” said Mr. Akuei.

He said he has noted the names, amount and locations of the 20 tables along the highway.

“There are tables that take 50 pounds, another takes 100 pounds. It’s very serious for a businessman which is passed on to a local person,” added Akuei.

Mr Akuei said the illegal collection has resumed although the Minister of Finance has established one single account for paying taxes countrywide.
