Hearing of case against WBGS governor adjourned

Author : | Published: Tuesday, June 23, 2015

The Supreme Court has postponed the hearing of a case against the governor of Western Bahr al-Ghazal for a week due to lack of quorum.

In March, the former speaker of the state assembly, Andrea Mayar, sued Governor Rizik Zechariah, over alleged violation of the constitution during his impeachment.

Mr Mayar says Mr Rizik interfered in the operations of the assembly and influenced MPs to remove him from the position.

He says the interference is against the state constitution. Mr Rizik has denied the claim.

The Constitutional Court was supposed to hear the official response of the governor today, but there were no enough judges for the sitting to go ahead.

Chief Justice Chan Reec called off the hearing until the 30th of June.

“The unfortunate thing this morning is that the quorum of the court is incomplete, and we prefer that the quorum is complete before we receive the reply, just in case somebody would want to say something about that reply,” Justice Reec said.

“So what we have agreed is that this sitting will have to be adjourned for the 30th of this month, by that time the quorum would be complete.”
