Gov’t dismisses alleged assassination attempt on Kiir

Author : | Published: Thursday, August 28, 2014

The Office of the President has dismissed media report that the son of late Dr. John Garang had attempted to assassinate President Salva Kiir in Addis Ababa.

Media report claims that Mabior John Garang, was arrested by Ethiopian intelligent for trying to assassinate President Kiir in hotel on Monday.

It says the Ethiopian Security personnel who were protecting IGAD heads of state during the recent summit in Addis Ababa, arrested Mabior at a reception of the hotel where President Kiir was residing.

The report said Mabior was caught with a cocked pistol with six bullets.

However, the press secretary in the office of the President, Ateny Wek Ateny, says the media report was fabricated.

“If Mabior Garang was arrested in Ethiopia, then it has no connection with any attempt to assassinate the President,” said Mr Ateny.

He said the alleged arrest of Mr Mabior has not been shared by Ethiopian intelligence with the President.

“Such fabricated lies are meant to scare off the President from representing South Sudan internationally, but this will not and shall never shake President Kiir’s resolve to pull this country from the abyss of the current selfish and man-made war being imposed on South Sudan.”

Mr. Ateny Wek condemned what he calls rumor mongering, and urged the people of South Sudan to disregard that false media report.
