Floods displace over 20,000 in Twic East

More than 20,000 people have been displaced by floods in seven villages the area, according to the Commissioner of Twic East County, Jonglei.

“The assessment team is still there but we just made an estimate that 23,000 have been affected,” Dau Akoi said.

He said crops were destroyed in the floods. Mr. Akoi says county officials are trying to mobilize community members to build small dykes in the affected areas.

Yearly, thousands of people in the area are affected by heavy rains in lowlands on the eastern bank of Nile River.

In 2014, thousands of households were affected and four primary health Care Units were destroyed by heavy rains.
