Gov’t gives Dr. Riek conditions for returning to Juba

The former First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar should

denounce violence and desist from practicing politics if he wants to come back to South Sudan, says the government.

It says this is because the peace process is going on smoothly, and should not be interrupted.

Dr. Machar fled the country following the recent clashes in Juba. The UN Deputy Spokesperson, Farhan Haq confirmed a few days ago that he was extracted to the DR Congo.

The Minister of information, Michael Makuei Lueth says the government does not have any problem with his extraction.

But he says Dr. Machar should consider the two conditions if he wants to return to the country, addressing reporters after the meeting of the cabinet ministers.

“If Riek Machar wants to come back to South Sudan, then he should denounce violence, because, it is his coming here which created this violence, so he should denounce violence, so that we do not go back to war.

“Number two, he should abstain from politics.

Earlier on, the IGAD called for the return of Dr. Riek Machar to Juba to take up his position as the First Vice President.

However, Mr. Makuei said the decision on whether Dr. Machar should come back as the First Vice President is for the SPLM IO to make.

“The IGAD has no right to impose Riek Machar on the movement, when Riek Machar was elected; it was not IGAD that brought him to lead that movement called the SPLM IO, it is the people who elected him

“If these same people have decided to remove him, then nobody in this world has the right to impose him on the movement

Mr. Makuei added that whether or not Riek Machar should return to take his position “is an internal issue of the IO, which has nothing to do with IGAD, or any other body in this world.”
