The church asks warring parties to sign IGAD-Plus deal

Church leaders are appealing to the government and the SPLM-In Opposition to sign a final peace agreement this month.

The bishops say the 20-month conflict must end so that the people of South Sudan can re-build their lives.

The IGAD-Plus has proposed a draft comprise peace agreement which has been scheduled to be signed by principals President Kiir and Dr Riek Machar on the 17th of August.

However, the Office of the President says it’s not comfortable with some the provisions in the document.

In power sharing, the proposal suggests that the SPLM in Opposition takes 53% of the government positions in the three states affected by the conflict during the transitional period.

President Kiir says giving the SPLM in Opposition larger percentage of power sharing in the Upper Nile region is meant to divide the county.

“Those who made this idea don’t want peace to come to South Sudan,” the President said in a speech marking the Martyrs’ Day in Juba.

Paulino Lukudu Loro, Archbishop of Juba, says although some provisions in the draft agreement are weak, the parties must sign it in order to end the violence.

“We are stressing on peace. Peace must be signed. This document must be signed in order to produce peace,” Archbishop Loro said.

“If this document…..is not signed, that means we are just going on pouring blood, killing, robbing, dying, displacing…”

The Catholic Bishops also urged the government to help end the violent incidents in Western Equatoria State.
